Custom vs Universal Fit Car Sunshades
Edited by LesomTech
Car sunshade ranges usually mix two approaches. Universal shades are built to a size range and then positioned or trimmed, while custom shades are developed to the geometry of a specific roof or window. The difference shows up in edge gaps, storage, tooling cost and how fit is confirmed. LesomTech is a manufacturing and trading group with two factories in Dongguan, and its five sunshade lines cover both routes.
The risk sits in different places. A universal windshield or side window shade needs no vehicle-specific tooling, so a range can start without pattern development, but the buyer confirms coverage, corner gaps, folding, storage and the interior match. A custom sunroof shade needs a pattern or tooling, a sample and a vehicle trial, with production at 100 pieces per style after sample approval.
What universal fit means for sunshades
A universal fit shade is sized to cover a range of vehicles rather than one opening. It is the usual route for windshields and side windows, where a panel can be positioned, trimmed or tucked to the glass without vehicle-specific tooling. Entry stays simple: no pattern development, no tooling cost, and a few sizes serve several models. The buyer decides how much trimming the product can take before it looks unfinished.
The limits appear at the edges. Corner coverage, gaps along the pillar or dash, folding, storage and the interior match are for the buyer to confirm on the vehicle. A size label does not turn a universal shade into a confirmed fit, so sample review stays in the process. Magnetic, umbrella-style and rear-window shades sit outside our five lines.
What custom fit means
A custom fit shade is developed to the geometry of a named vehicle. The work starts with a pattern: the roller line has five ready SKUs, and the fold-flat framed line has patterns on file for more than 60 models. Those records shorten the route to a sample, but they are tooling records, not approval for a car. Where nothing matches, the pattern is developed for the project, with tooling and sampling quoted separately.
Production follows sample approval, at a minimum of 100 pieces per style, with payment terms and lead time quoted per project. This route suits brand owners, model-specific ranges and programmes that need consistent edges, a defined storage position and interior match. Tooling and sampling belong to the project, not to a generic size.
How to choose between the two
Start with the market and the coverage the range must deliver. A broad range for many models usually leans on universal shades for windshields and side windows, where one size serves several cars. A programme built around a few high-value models, a neat edge and a defined storage position justifies custom development on the sunroof lines. Development time, return cost and the volume per model belong in the same comparison.
Check whether one supplier can run both routes; mixed catalogues are common. We make universal side window and windshield shades and custom sunroof shades in the same group, so one project can combine them, and the choice follows the assortment rather than the supplier. Either way, fit is confirmed after sample approval, not by a size chart or a vehicle list.
| Aspect | Universal fit | Custom fit |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Sized to a range, then trimmed to the glass | Cut to one vehicle outline from a pattern |
| Tooling | No vehicle-specific tooling | Pattern on file or new tooling, quoted |
| Order entry | No tooling cost, 100 pieces per style | 100 pieces per style plus tooling and sample cost |
| Development | Sample to an agreed size, no pattern work | Pattern, sample and vehicle trial before production |
| Fit confirmation | Buyer checks gaps, folding and interior match | Confirmed only after sample approval |
What to settle before comparing the two routes
- List every model, year and window position to cover.
- Photograph the roof or window opening with trim before sampling.
- Ask if a pattern is on file or tooling is needed, priced separately.
- Agree the unit, contents and quantity per style against the 100 piece minimum.
- Check folding, storage and interior match, then record approval.
